When we first moved into our house we had Dish Network. After about a year we changed to DIRECTV (in part because we were able to get a combo-type deal with BellSouth and DIRECTV that cut down on our monthly phone, DSL, and TV bills). Now, as of about 2 1/2 months ago, we’ve moved to AT&T U-verse for TV and Internet (having cancelled regular phone service altogether, opting for trying magicJack instead; we may cover that technology at another time). And so far, so very good! For the entire package we were able to get – and for the way it has worked over the first 10 weeks – we have no complaints whatsoever. Here are the details of what we signed up for:

- AT&T U-verse TV U200 (channel list)
- AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet Max (12 Mbps)
- Two receivers (one DVR, in living room; one regular, in bedroom)
- Wireless gateway (router) for Internet access
Everything has worked extremely well (no down time at all; it’s nice not having to worry about that when stormy weather moves in when compared to what used to happen with satellite dishes). Right off the bat – I mean as soon as they installation guy finished hooking things up – you could see that the picture quality was very good (improved even over what I thought was very good quality with DIRECTV). While we don’t have HD, I don’t much feel like we need it; the picture quality is that good (seems like it falls somewhere in-between SD [standard definition] and HD). The DVR – of which Faith is a big fan – has worked without error (not a single scheduled recording missed) and we’ve found that we use it a lot more than we thought we would (quite convenient to be able to watch things when you want in good quality without having to break out the VHS tapes). Internet access has been really nice, too (for $7 more a month than we were paying for 3.0 Mbps DSL with BellSouth we now have up to 4x the speed [12 Mbps] and we’ve been downloading this, that, and the other like crazy). The wireless gateway (through which TV data signal goes through as well) replaced our older wireless router and has actually worked even more reliably.
Probably the most reassuring part of the whole switchover process was how well and how quickly AT&T handled the promotional cards (i.e., rebate-type Visa gift cards) we were promised when we signed up: $300 for signing up online; $20 for upgrading to a faster Internet speed right after our installation was completed; and another $60 (via bill credits, $10 per month x 6 months) for doing eBill and automatic payments. Other than one or two contacts we had to make to ensure that we were going to receive the proper promotional amounts, everything went very smoothly: we had the promotional cards in our hands within a month or so of activating service (and the bill credits should start with our third bill next month). All in all the billing aspect has been a positive experience, as has what we hoped would be the cost/savings between our new setup and old. If you compare what we’re currently paying for U-verse and the magicJack vs. our previous TV/Internet/local and long distance phone accounts we’re saving over $500 the first year, more than $200 the three years after that. Needless to say, we’re thankful we made the switch! Care to join us?
